Trial of new texts for future use in Key Stage 2 English Reading assessments
What is the purpose of the trial?
The National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER) has been commissioned by the Standards and Testing Agency (STA) to design a new set of reading texts for use in statutory end of Key Stage 2 national curriculum tests. We are very much hoping that the sampled schools would be willing to help us with a text trial which we believe year 6 teachers and children would find both enjoyable and informative. The purpose of the trial is to gauge the levels of enjoyment and engagement with texts that might be used in the live tests.
Who is sponsoring NFER to carry out this work?
The National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER) has been contracted by the Standards and Testing Agency to carry out this trial.
How have schools been selected to take part?
NFER has drawn a nationally representative sample of 300 schools with age-appropriate pupils from across England to take part in the trial.
What does taking part involve?
We would like the sampled schools to allow one of our researchers to spend an hour with one or more of their year 6 classes and their teacher. The session can take place in the children’s normal classroom environment and no preparation will need to be carried out prior to the session. Teachers will not be required to look at or mark any of the pupils’ responses. The one hour session can take place on a date and time of schools’ choosing during the period 13 January to 14 February 2020.
How will NFER use and protect the data collected?
All information collected during this trial will be kept confidential by NFER and no individual or school will be identified in any report. NFER will not disclose names of individuals or schools involved in the trial, either in any reports arising from the use of this data or in any other way.
