Education Select Committee multi-academy trusts inquiry: NFER response

07 September 2016

Many academy trusts operate a single school, but others are responsible for a chain of schools which typically operate as multi-academy trusts (MATs). MATs already play a substantial role in today's education system and, with the Government’s direction of travel towards a fully academised system, this role is set to increase still further.

With MATs operating with relatively little scrutiny, in March 2016 the House of Commons Education Select Committee launched an inquiry into this increasingly important 'middle tier' between Whitehall and individual schools in order to examine the performance, accountability, and governance of MATs.

NFER submitted written evidence to the inquiry and was subsequently called to give oral evidence in September 2016.
