NFER response - House of Lords Youth Unemployment Committee Inquiry

14 May 2021

The House of Lords Youth Unemployment Committee is considering what measures should be taken to tackle youth unemployment. It is examining how the labour market may change due to current events such as COVID-19, Brexit, and technological developments in the years ahead. It intends to propose long-term, durable solutions, and will report before the end of November 2021.

NFER submitted evidence to the Committee’s inquiry, drawing on evidence produced by NFER over recent years as well as wider research. NFER’s evidence focuses on three main topics:

  • The main challenges facing young people seeking employment today;
  • Whether the national curriculum equips young people with the right knowledge and skills to find secure jobs and careers;
  • Whether careers education prepares young people with the knowledge to explore the range of opportunities available.
