Commenting on the Prime Minister’s announcement today on the Government’s AI Opportunities Action Plan, Dr Ben Styles, Head of Classroom Practice and Workforce at NFER, said:

“Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the classroom is an exciting development. Our recent evaluation showed that teachers using ChatGPT reduced their lesson planning time by 31 per cent, on average.  This appears to have been without any reduction in lesson quality, although more research is required to be certain of this.

“It will be interesting to explore how AI can benefit other aspects of teacher workload, like marking and administration. These tasks probably represent a greater burden, and we look forward to exploring the potential for AI to make impacts here too.”
