Acting with Intent: Theatre companies and their education programmes

This research report presents an analysis of the educational role and practices of ten very different theatre companies in England, as described by their staff. During the summer of 2000, researchers conducted over 70 interviews with artistic directors, Board members, managers and mediators such as actors and writers. They revealed their aims and purposes for conducting educational work and how their education work related to their wider artistic activities.
The report outlines examples of education programmes and projects, and analyses the ways in which these examples address the stated educational aims of the companies. It also explores the factors that are seen by theatre staff to impact on their ability to provide an effective contribution to education in its broadest sense, while maintaining their wider artistic remit.
