PISA 2018 Additional Analyses: Mathematics and science item analysis in Wales

The Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) is a study of educational achievement run by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). The PISA study takes place every three years and examines the performance of 15 year old pupils in reading, mathematics and science. It also collects a range of contextual information on school and pupil backgrounds. Wales has participated in PISA since 2006. In 2018, 79 countries from across the world took part in the PISA study.
This report examines learners’ responses to individual questions (items) from the PISA 2018 in Wales in order to:
- explore the strengths and weaknesses of learners in Wales in science and mathematics
- identify what type of items (questions) learners tended to skip or fail to gain credit on
- compare the performance of learners in Wales with that of those in selected comparator countries and in the OECD overall
- consider differences in patterns of responses by gender, language of assessment, medium of schooling, socioeconomic status and attainment quartile.
