Research on learning recovery in Yorkshire and the Humber

What is the purpose of this research study?

White Rose Maths (WRM) has asked the National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER) to conduct research to explore the specific impact of the pandemic on pupils in schools in Yorkshire and the Humber region. There is some evidence to suggest that the pandemic has had a particularly adverse impact on pupils’ learning in the region compared to other areas. This study seeks to understand the challenges that schools have faced and how recovery in the region can best be supported.

The study involves a review of existing evidence and a bespoke survey with senior leaders and maths and English heads/subject leads in mainstream primary and secondary schools in Yorkshire and the Humber region.

A report will be produced to provide insights on regional variation in experiences of the pandemic, and learning recovery and support strategies for schools.

How can schools take part?

All mainstream primary and secondary schools in Yorkshire and the Humber region will receive an email invitation to take part in an online survey in November 2021. The survey should take 15 minutes to complete, and will explore:

  • Views on teaching and learning strategies during partial school closures
  • Views on pupils’ current learning needs
  • Views on learning recovery strategies
  • Views on challenges to learning recovery
  • Views on support required to aid learning recovery.

If you are sent the survey we would be very grateful to receive your responses to help inform this study and future support and learning recovery strategies.

How will NFER use and protect the data collected?

All data gathered during the research project will be held in accordance with the Data Protection Act 2018 and General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and will be treated in the strictest confidence by the NFER. No school or teacher will be named in any report arising from this work.
