The NFER has been commissioned by the Department for Education (DfE) to undertake qualitative research on the T Level Transition Programme. This research will be undertaken between October 2019 and September 2021.
T Levels are new two-year programmes, designed with employers, to give young people the skills that industry needs. They will provide post-GCSE students with a technical alternative to A levels. The first three T Levels in: Digital, Production, Design and Development; Design, Surveying and Planning; and Education will be delivered from September 2020.
The T Level Transition Programme is targeted at students who are not yet ready to start a T Level but who have the potential to undertake one following a programme of tailored support and preparation. The programme will develop learners’ skills, experience, knowledge and behaviours to support progression onto, and success on, a T Level. It will be introduced through phased implementation from September 2020 by 36 T Level 2020 approved providers. The Association of Colleges (AoC), in collaboration with their partners The Challenge Network (TCN), is supporting these T Level providers in their preparations for, and delivery of, the Transition programme.
Research into the T Level Transition Programme will include interviews with providers and staff from the AoC and TCN who are supporting providers, as well as case-study visits to gather views of learners.
